Comparative Analysis of Drugs with Chondroprotective Effect: a Review

ABSTRACT

INTRODUCTION. Medications with chondroprotective effects are used in the treatment of osteoarthritis.

AIM. To conduct a comparative analysis and characterize drugs with chondroprotective properties.

MATERIALS AND METHODS. The search was conducted for the period from 2000 to 2024 in the PubMed and E-library scientific electronic library database by keywords: «symptom-modifying», «structural-modifying», «disease-modifying», «osteoarthritis», «multicentre double-blind randomized study», «chondroitin sulfate», «glucosamine sulfate», «undenatured collagen type II», «avocado-soybean unsaponifiables», «diacerein», «glycosaminoglycan-peptide complex», «bioactive concentrate of small marine fish», as well as on the database websites The Ministry of Health of the Russian Federation is a rubricator of clinical recommendations for the keywords: «gonarthrosis», «coxarthrosis», and the State Register of Medicines. The articles in which a systematic review and meta-analysis (9 articles), randomized clinical trials (10 articles), clinical recommendations (10 articles) and conclusions of leading experts in the field under study (7 articles) are analyzed.

CONCLUSION. These drugs have different characteristics and levels of evidence. Preference in the treatment of patients with osteoarthritis should be given to drugs with symptomatic and structural-modifying effects – chondroitin sulfate and glucosamine sulfate. This position is reflected in the updated clinical guidelines of the Russian Ministry of Health. In 2024, the new «Coxarthrosis 2024» and «Gonarthrosis 2024» control centers of the Ministry of Health of Russia were approved. The regulator's position on the use of chondroitin sulfate and glucosamine sulfate coincides with the opinion of international medical communities and experts, which is reflected in international clinical guidelines for choosing treatment tactics for patients with osteoarthritis.
